The weather and temperatures impact a lot of what we do. In Arizona and the surrounding regions, we know just how hot it can get. It determines our plans, our jobs, our exercise, our vacations and so much more. It also impacts our vehicles in many ways. Extreme heat can do a number on our vehicles, particularly our car batteries. The last thing you want is to be out and about in the vehicle on a hot day only to have the battery die on you, or to be on a road trip and get stranded in the heat with a dead battery on the side of the road. Any time your car battery dies, it is inconvenient, stressful and sometimes downright dangerous.
Weather Takes its Toll
Car batteries are not meant to last forever. In fact, experts estimate that five to 7 years is not unusual as long as the battery is operated under normal conditions. Extremely hot weather and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life, according to the Car Council. The battery contains liquid and heat causes it to evaporate. Low fluid levels will damage the internal structure of the battery. (Batteries contain a liquid being a mixture of acid and water.) It also generates heat which causes the liquid to slowly evaporate. When the fluid level gets too low, the internal plates of the battery are not adequately protected and damage can occur.
Steps to Protect Your Battery
Damaged batteries or older car batteries are heat prone. A battery inspection or battery service at one of our recommended auto repair shops can help you ensure that your battery is ready for summer weather or those road trips you dreamed of all summer long.
Your driving habits can contribute to shorter battery life. Frequent engine on and off start cycles will cause more wear on the starter than just routinely going to and from work. Other factors include weather conditions, mileage, your vehicle’s age and condition, and excessive electrical needs such as vehicle entertainment systems.
Find an Auto Repair Shop that Knows Batteries
A sign to watch for if your car battery could be already struggling and exacerbated by the extreme heat is when you notice headlights and interior lights dim, accessories fail to operate, or the “check engine” and/or battery light comes on. Find one of our recommended repair shops to check out the situation and get your vehicle’s battery replaced or charged up so you can have a little more peace of mind driving in the heat.
