The summer temps are in full swing and we know how busy life can get in the summer. But we also want to remind our valued clients of the dangers of leaving pets and children in cars during the hot summer months. Several police and first responders have received calls already about children and pets being left inside vehicles – this can become a life-threatening situation and we want to keep everyone safe and aware during the summer.
A Preventable Situation
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat-related illness happens when the body’s temperature control system is overloaded. Children under age four are at greatest risk. This can happen to our pets as well when left in hot vehicles. It’s true! Our pets can get heatstroke if they exert themselves in the heat, don’t have shade and water, or are left in a car.
What are the Symptoms of Heatstroke?
In children, heat illnesses can include a severe headache, dizziness, weakness, confusion, nausea, rapid breathing and heart rate, loss of consciousness, seizures or no sweat.
In pets, symptoms of heatstroke for pets include excessive panting, discolored gums and also mobility problems. Pet owners should seek veterinary attention immediately should their pet suffer from these symptoms. Waiting could exacerbate the situation or become deadly.
Let’s Reduce the Statistics Together
In 2018, there were 52 child vehicular heatstroke deaths, up from 43 deaths in 2017. How did most of these situations happen? According to data from Car Pro USA, 54% (429 children) were forgotten by a caregiver; 26% (209 children) were playing in an unattended vehicle; 19% (150 children) were intentionally left in a vehicle by an adult; and 1% (10 children) died under unknown circumstances. Another reminder during the hot summer months is to be sure your vehicle’s cooling system is working properly.
