In a Down economy, Consumer Education About Auto Repair is an Important Factor in Car Care

by | Jun 6, 2012 | Economy

The website SearchAutoParts.com (affiliated with Motor Age magazine) reported recently that in 2011, 84 percent of vehicles needed service or parts, the highest percentage in five years, according to the Car Care Council.
But why is that?
Some blame the economy. In a weak economy, many motorists think they will save money by putting off necessary, and needed, auto repairs. But what some may not realize is that neglecting routine service will cost more in the end, especially when your car breaks down unexpectedly due to lack of maintenance. The article suggests that this demonstrates just how important consumer education is, since the lack of proper vehicle maintenance can have a large impact on highway safety and air quality.
The article also reported that the top problem areas of needed repairs were engine and oil fluids, air filters, battery cables, lights, belts and hoses. Nearly one out of ten vehicles that needed service had their check engine light on, and new air filters were needed in 19 percent of the vehicles. Also, ten percent of the batteries in the cars that needed service were not properly held down, and 15 percent required at least one new hose.
It is important to remember that most of these repairs are ones that can be easily detected, if you bring your car to your neighborhood NARPRO auto repair shop for routine checks. Also, many of them are not that expensive; a new air filter can range from $10 to $50, and replacing a radiator hose can cost around $100. Plus, like we stated earlier, foregoing necessary repairs to try and save a little cash will cause more problems with your car, and your wallet, in the long run.
