What Do Those Dash Lights Mean?

by | Sep 2, 2009 | Repair

Here’s the bottom line when it comes to what to do when the dash light comes on when driving.

If it’s Yellow in color, it’s warning you that you need to have the car looked at by a professional mechanic within a week or so. The car is telling you that it needs to be checked. Don’t put it off because it could turn into a red light and you do not want to see one of those!

Yellow means something’s not right, like a tire or fluid level is low, or even a check engine/service soon message. Professional Mechanics have a special computer they can connect to your car and it will give them detailed information on what is happening to your car and can then give you options on what to do.

If the message or symbol is RED pull over immediately and turn off the engine as quickly and safely as you can. The car is telling you that something is really wrong and if you don’t turn do something right now, you or your car (interchange car with wallet) is in danger!

RED could be Stop Engine, Low oil, Braking system. All things that could be very dangerous or very expensive if you ignore it and keep driving. A $100 tow may be the least of your problems if you blow up an engine just because you didn’t want to stop right then.

By the way, when you start your car, get familiar with all of those lights that do light up for a second or two on the dashboard. Some symbols are a little confusing, so pull out your vehicle manual or if you have questions contact a NARPRO.com recommended mechanic for help.
