How to Spot Car Repair Troubles Using Your Senses

by | Oct 15, 2012 | Repair

Here at NARPRO, we are consistently trying to help you, the consumer, maintain your car in the best way possible. So that’s why our Executive Director, Alan Tarr, created the Savvy Consumer’s Guide to Auto and Truck Repair. This guide provides consumers with 39 ways they can spot potential car repair troubles using just their senses; eyes, ears, nose and hands!

Over the next couple posts, we will share with you a few items pertaining to each of the senses mentioned. If this information intrigues you and you would like to learn more, please contact administrator@narpo.com, and request your own FREE Savvy Consumer’s Guide to Auto and Truck Repair. Just put GUIDE in the subject line.

Here’s a sneak peek of a few of the tips for what to look for and smell for if you think your car needs repairing…

Looks Like Trouble – If you see small stains under your car, or maybe a drop or two of fluid, there is usually no need for alarm. Large wet spots that are dark in color deserve immediate attention. However, puddles that are clear are usually nothing to be concerned about.

Smells Like Trouble – Some car problems are right under your nose, and you don’t even realize it! Often, it’s very easy to detect repair issues by their odor. For example, one smell to pay attention to is the smell of burnt toast. If that smell is coming form your car, whether it’s a light or sharp odor, this is usually a sign of an electrical short and burning insulation.

Another smell to really pay attention to is that of rotten eggs, i.e. a continuous burning sulfur smell. Often, this signifies a problem in the catalytic converter and it’s very important to get this taken care of right away.
